Popular Types of Vinegar
Below are a few different forms of vinegar from your own kitchen cupboards that you may know.
1. The White Vinegar Distillated
The most common type of vinegar used in America is white vinegar, and there's a good chance that it's sitting right now in your kitchen. It provides a sharp taste and a harsh odour, making it one of the most distinct types of vinegar on this list. This is because white vinegar is distilled from grain, leading to a clear and crisp product.
It is a popular pickling agent and can be used in zesty barbecue sauces, salad dressings, and ketchup, although white vinegar may be too pungent for most recipes. Its intense flavour provides an perfect match for extraordinarily sweet ingredients when used in a recipe.
2. Vinegar with Apple Cider
Apple cider vinegar is one of the most common types of vinegar used for both flavouring and preserving food. It is created by adding bacteria and yeast to the fluid to make crushed and strained apples.
A method of fermentation. Sugar, making the liquid alcoholic, is then added to the mixture. It is this alcoholic juice which is fermented and converted into vinegar once again. Apple cider vinegar has a golden hue and can be used to give marinades, salad dressings, tea, coleslaw, and chutneys a tart and subtle fruity taste.
3. Balsamic vinegar
The only type of vinegar not created by fermenting alcohol is this native Italian vinegar. Balsamic vinegar is made, like a fine wine, by ageing pressed grapes in oak barrels. And just like wine, the higher the price tag, the older the balsamic. There is a separate sweet and zesty flavour of balsamic vinegar that can be drizzled over both savoury and sweet dishes. Or, for a classic balsamic vinaigrette dressing, mix it with olive oil.
4. Vinegar with Red Rice
Red vinegar is made from fermented red rice, while red wine vinegar comes from red wine. It provides a much milder taste than red wine vinegar, which means the two can not be substituted for one another.
5. Champagne Vinegar
6. Vinegar Sherry
Sherry vinegar, the more exotic cousin of balsamic vinegar, is an ingredient that can add a major punch to your favourite recipes. Less sweetness than balsamic vinegar provides the nutty, rich taste. It is also strong, which means that, particularly as a substitute, it should be used sparingly.
